How Asendia is helping European brands sell more in Asia-Pacific

05 August, 2022

E-Commerce

Asian markets are growing at a rate of around 20% per year on average, which is impressive in itself, but when you compare that to an approximate 10% on average growth in Europe, it’s easy to see why Asia-Pacific is a great place to grow your business overseas.

So why is this, and how does the region’s growth compare by country? Research by Asendia found:

  • China is the number 1 e-commerce market worldwide and other countries from South-East Asia are forecast to be number 4 by 2025
  • Asian e-commerce is mainly driven by very few local marketplaces such as Alibaba, Lazada, Tmall or Shopee (representing 80% of sales vs 50% in Europe for marketplaces)
  • Asian marketplaces apply much lower fees than European ones
  • The Covid-19 Pandemic accelerated e-commerce growth in Australia and New Zealand as the countries achieved the world's highest e-commerce growth in Q2 (108%) & Q3 (107%) 2020
  • Shoppers love to buy EU branded products

What’s more, Australia and New Zealand had the world's highest e-commerce growth in Q2 & Q3 2020.

  • Australia is home to 25.7 million people with a total GDP of US$1.2 trillion and has the 10th highest real GDP per capita.
  • Shoppers purchase online from China (50%), Australia (46%) the US (42% and the UK (35%).

The GDP of some Asian-Pacific countries are growing too, giving locals more buying power.

This is also happening in Thailand too.

  • Gross merchandise value worth $18 billion in 2020
  • 81% eCommerce growth
  • Thailand’s overall economy is likely to reach US $53 billion dollars in value by 2025
