March 8th is International Women's Day, and we wanted to celebrate this fantastic day by 'shining a spotlight' on a few of our Asendian women who have inspired other Asendians across the business. We asked our Culture Champions to nominate women within Asendia UK who they felt had been inspirational. It could be for a variety of reasons – their journey within Asendia has inspired them to think big, maybe they are inspirational leaders in their role or when faced with personal life challenges they have shown courage and positivity despite the challenges they face. Whatever the reasons, these ladies have inspired so we want to shine a spotlight.
We will all have our own opportunity to vote, a lady within the business who has inspired us. If you wish to shine your personal spotlight, please share on Viva Engage or fill out our dedicated survey. We would love to hear from you and share our fabulous, inspirational Asendian Women with the business.
One of the things I truly love about Asendia is how diverse we are as a business. Within HR, I inspire inclusion by building trusted relationships with Managers and the wider team while creating a safe space to challenge thinking. I aim to educate team members to embrace individuals' different learning styles, cultural backgrounds and perspectives. Personally, I believe it is so important for everyone to feel that they belong, not just in Asendia, but in the world.
Optimistic, Balanced, Social
Going into any challenges I have faced, from struggling with learning difficulties, personal matters, completing my Degree or managing difficult work projects/people, my Mother always tells me to "Wear my invisible crown". (means hold your head up high) My mum and Dad had a very strong work ethic. They were ambitious and worked their way up to senior positions.
In HR, we often have to make very difficult decisions that directly impact people and have very challenging conversations. I believe that questioning yourself, looking at all the options and being reasonable is part of the process; it's good to think about your decisions instead of just going with the flow.
I am a Libra, and we are meant to be balanced individuals. A quick Google brought this up, which is very accurate for me anyway... "Libras have a deep sense of fairness and believe in treating others with respect and equality. Librans are known for their ability to see multiple perspectives. They strive to make decisions that are morally just and balanced".
I have built a bar at home, haha!
Valued, appreciated and that I was doing something right, especially as the nomination came from 2 different sites and were professional working relationships. Word of affirmation means a lot. A £50 voucher is great – but the recognition means much more.
Presenting skills – I know I have the confidence in myself to stand up and speak. I think this comes from knowledge, understanding the processes and having confidence in myself.
Also, the need to have balance - Put yourself in other people's shoes to see both sides of the argument. Look at the different external perspectives and how it impacts the individual. Need to look at the bigger picture.
I am a cheerful, kind person. I would also choose the word helpful as I am always willing to help others.
My mantra is not to compare yourself to others. Each of us travels at our own speed, in our own time. I find it is best to focus on what is here and now.
“If you fell down yesterday, stand up today” H.G.Wells
Consciously choose the people you choose to surround yourself with. Trust your gut. Forgive.
Honestly, I was shocked. But I was really happy.
I had my mother to guide me. But at some point, I had to create my own life. I had to focus on things: the difficult breakdown of my marriage and a very young daughter.
I had to be focused. I had to give love not only to my child but also to my mom, who was very supportive.
I just had to give give give.
Simple, get naked!
Stands for:
N = never quit
A = accept failures
K = kill mediocrity & strive for the best
E = Explore your fears
D = Do your work!
When I came to this country, I had a bad experience. I faced racism and all that stuff. But after joining Asendia, the team was so welcoming and warm. I'm so happy. It's been four and a half years.
I feel I am a family member of Asendia; I feel very supported, and trust has been built - I can cry my pain, share my pain and share my happiness. I sometimes have to fight with my fear each day to come out of it. I'm doing it. By being at Asendia, I can dream of reaching the sky.
A few words, a few positive words, you know, matters a lot.
They can just boost you up from the inside. They can just turn your problems upside down and give you new wings to fly and face the problems. No one can walk this journey of life alone. You require support from a good friend, a good mentor, or good parents.
Don Bosco: Do not put off till tomorrow the good things you can do today because you may not have tomorrow.
Just give love, do whatever you want to do, good or bad. Be naughty, be good, but just do it today.
I absolutely live for today!
We don't know what the future has in store for us. Life is about M&M's: memories and mistakes. But live for today. Don't miss out on this time. Don't miss out on this age. You will not get it back.
Thank you so much for giving me this opportunity. I feel so proud of myself, thinking, 'Yes, I'm able to touch somebody'.
It is a balance between the things you hold on to and the things that you let go of. The moment we strike a balance between them both, I feel your mind is at ease.
Can someone else decide how my day is going to be? No! It's in my control. That's my basic guiding principle. It's me who is in control of my own emotions and how I want to go through a difficult situation. The situation itself you can never change. You have to go through it. How you go through it is all down to us.
Inclusion for me includes everything, not just the obvious culture, race, gender, religion, etc.; it's adapting to different personalities, each with different types of emotional strengths, and & inspiring inclusion in the workplace.
How do I treat this person? They can't be treated the same as the other. So, I'm happy to take the time to think about what the best approach might be and adapt to each individual. I feel it's important to be gently honest and build trust to give (and be able to hear) honest feedback. It's a fine line between holding on and letting go. We just have to be there evaluating every situation, be like a tree, and let the dead leaves drop. Let things go if they're not serving you well let them go and make that conscious choice.
We have such little time here on this planet. Few things are not worth thinking about over and over because tomorrow is not mine. Only today. You are not defined by someone else's emotions.
Raise your words and not your voice.
Through regular meditation.
Being patient and not really panicking about it. Don't jump to conclusions; it's often the circumstances that will bring the best or the worst of someone. Only you can be in control of your own self & your response - the outside factors or circumstances will always change. Nothing is permanent; nothing is there forever.
Every day is a new day. Nothing is permanent
So stay strong. Don't judge; we don't know what others are going through. It's us as individuals who create our own thoughts, so if you're sad or happy, It's because of your own doing.
Give more than you take. Giving your time, consideration, patience, emotional strength, listening – it doesn't have to be about giving things or money.
There is always opportunity to grow to make a positive impact in all situations, afterwards, learn from a situation, then grow even more. Therefore, my mantra is “embrace challenges as an opportunity for growth”.
I come from Africa, I am inspired by people who break barriers, for example, Nelson Mandela. He was imprisoned and then went on to become President!
Also, I’m inspired by people who promote a better world. No just for us, but for generations to come.
I am very resilient. I have a very strong support network. My friends, my family, and my colleagues.
I have been with Asendia 20 years, I started out working weekends in the warehouse sorting mail. A full time opportunity opened and I took it with both hands. It was very different back then.
I then moved to Operational Admin – goods check in and check out, then to the commercial team. When Asendia was created I moved to Customer Support – it was a wholesale executive role, and it was my break into account management which is where I now work.
I have had great opportunities at Asendia – each role has given me knowledge and insight into different areas of the business.
Starting in the warehouse, the knowledge I gained there helped me with my future roles moving into the office environment as you truly understand how the business works. Working in commercial – you are in the middle of everything as you touch on so many different areas of the business.
