New Zealand – Update on the situation at Auckland Airport

22 September, 2017

New Zealand Post wishes to further advise the designated operators of UPU member countries that Auckland Airport's aviation fuel rationing will continue into next week and that work is ongoing to restore the damaged pipeline. Airlines are able to access only 30% of their normal fuel allocations.

At this stage, the fuel operator indicates that work to repair the pipeline is scheduled for completion by 28 September 2017. However, this target is not confirmed and it is a changing situation.

Flight cancellations for both domestic and international airlines are continuing, with long-haul flights facing additional refuelling stopovers in Australia or the Pacific Islands. The flights affected are changing daily.

In terms of outbound international mail, New Zealand Post is continuing to work closely with its airline partners and the impacts are minimal, with New Zealand outbound mail continuing to transit within normal service delivery expectations.

New Zealand Post has noticed a sharp decrease in international inbound mail arriving into Auckland, and recommends that all UPU members liaise with their airline partners to assist in managing revised planned arrival times.

Once the restrictions are lifted, New Zealand Post anticipates a large volume of delayed/backlogged mail items arriving into Auckland. If UPU members are aware of any backlogs/offloads in their network, New Zealand Post would welcome advice of this, which should be sent to nick.hallett@nzpost.co.nz and cynthia.chin@nzpost.co.nz, indicating the location of the backlog, volumes and the anticipated arrival schedules into Auckland (final leg flight details). This information will greatly assist New Zealand Post in capacity, resource and contingency planning to ensure inbound mail items are processed and delivered in as timely and efficient a manner as possible, minimizing potential delays.

New Zealand Post wishes to thank all members for their understanding and appreciates any updated leg 2 information which members can share in advance.
